The captain of Sparta Prague football club, David Lafata, has announced
that he is retiring at the end of this season, the club said in a statement
on its website. The striker, who is 36, is currently the top scorer in the
Czech top flight with 198 goals.
Lafata said he would like to say goodbye to fans at Sparta’s last home game of the season against Olomouc on May 19. The veteran player picked up 41 caps for the Czech national team, finding the net nine times.
In football, Viktoria Plzeň moved nearer winning the league title in the
top Czech leage with a 2:0 win against Karviná at home.
The win gives them a 10 point lead against second place Slavia Prague who play on Sunday. That means that Plzeň could secure the title next week when they play Slavia. The two goals came from Tomáš Hořova.
In football, Czech league leaders Viktoria Plzeň secured a narrow 1:0 away
win against Zlín on Sunday night.
The win leaves Plzeň nine points clear of second placed Slavia Prague with a game in hand. It was the first league win for Plzeň since the start of the Spring half of the season.
Slavia failed to close the gap on Saturday in spite of overhauling a three goal deficit to draw 3:3 in the Prague derby against Sparta Prague.
