The Supreme Court in Olomouc has increased the prison sentence of a man who
brutally attacked tennis star Petra Kvitová in her apartment in 2016.
Thirty-four-year-old Radim Žondra’s term has been increased from eight
to 11 years. He had been initially found guilty of grievous bodily harm but
at the request of the state prosecutor the crime was requalified as
burglary, which carries a higher sentence.
When Kvitová tried to defend herself from her knife-wielding assailant she sustained career-threatening hand injuries that required major surgery.
Tomáš Berdych, who for many years had been the Czech number one
mens' tennis player, is expected to announce the end of his career
sometime during this Saturday. The 34-year-old said he believed it unlikely
he would continue into the 2020 season already in August, after he had been
eliminated in the first round of this year's US Open.
The former world number 4's biggest success was reaching the Wimbledon finals in 2010. He was also on the winning Czech team of the 2012 and 2013 Davis Cup. In recent years, Mr. Berdych has been plauged by hip injuries and is currently 103rd in the world.
Karolína Plíšková, the current world number two in womens’ tennis,
has chosen to part ways with former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martínez,
who has been a member of her coaching team since last year's US Open,
the Czech News Agency reported on Thursday, citing Plíšková’s manager
Michal Hrdlička as a source. Mr. Hrdlička said that the Czech tennis
number one will choose her new coach before preparations for the next
Ms. Plíšková, who has had several coaches throughout her career, wished her former trainer all the best into the future, but said that she wants to try to “move another step forward”.
Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová has failed to advance to the semifinals
of the WTA Championships, which takes place in Shenzen. The Czech second
seed was defeated by Australia’s Ashleigh Barty 6:4, 6:2 in the final
match of the group stage on Thursday.
Another Czech, Karolína Plíšková is set to face Romania’s Simona Halep on Friday for a place in the semi-fainals.
World number 3 Naomi Osaka beat second seed Petra Kvitová 7-6 (7/1), 4-6,
6-4 in the opening match of the WTA Finals in China on Sunday. The
three-set marathon lasted for 2 hours and 39 minutes.
The 22-year-old Japanese maintained her unbeaten status over Kvitová having won their only previous clash in three sets in Melbourne.
Kvitová now faces Australia‘s Ashleigh Barty and Belinda Bencic from Switzerland.
For the first time in five months, the Czech world no. 7 Petra Kvitová has
made it to a semi-final in a WTA Tour tournament, after beating Ukraine’s
Dayana Yastremska 6:2 6:4 in Wu Chan on Thursday. Just a few hours earlier,
her compatriot Kristýna Plíšková got into the last-four at the Tashkent
Open after beating Slovakia’s Viktória Kužmová 6:3 6:4.
Ms. Kvitová, who has already won at Wu Chan twice in 2014 and 2016 respectively, is yet to find out whether her opponent will be Alison Riske, or Elina Svitolina. For Kristýna Plíšková, who will be facing Beligian tennis player Alison Van Uytvanck, this is only the third fight for a WTA Tour singles final in her career. However, she has already shown she can do it in Tashkent, where she won her only major singles title so far.
Karolína Plíšková has been knocked out in the fourth round of the US
Open in New York. The Czech third seed, who was wearing a bandage on her
left thigh, lost 7-6 3-6 5-7 to the UK’s Johanna Konta in a dramatic
match lasting almost two and a half hours.
Plíšková’s exit at Flushing Meadows means she will not become world number after the final Grand Slam tournament of the season. She would have been the top-ranked player if she had reached the semi-finals.
Karolína Plíšková has reached the fourth round of the US Open in New
York. The Czech third seed overcame the Tunisian player Ons Jabeur 6-1 4-6
6-4 on Friday. It is the fourth year in a row that Plíšková has made it
into the second week of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
Her compatriot Karolína Muchová was knocked out 3-6 2-6 in the third round by US star Serena Williams, a six-time winner at Flushing Meadows.
Police arrested 28 fans of the Banik Ostrava football club following a riot

The visiting fans attacked local supporters, firefighters and police officers. At least one victim has been hospitalised.
Of those arrested 19 could be charged for disturbing the peace while seven may face charges for instigating a riot.
