Lukáš Krpálek has won the annual Czech Sportsman of the Year
competition. The Judo world champion beat second placed basketball player
Tomáš Satoránský by 74 points. The Boston Bruins's ice hockey
right winger David Pastrňák placed third. The winners in the collective
category were the Czech national basketball team, who placed sixth in this
year's FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Aside from ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr, Mr Krpálek is one of only two men to win the award in the past 14 years.
Olympic champion speed skater Martina Sáblíková broke her own world
record in the 3,000m race on Saturday at the ISU World Cup Finals in Salt
Lake City, USA.
She clocked in at 3:52.027, eclipsing her prior mark of 3:53.31 from last week in Calgary.
This is the third world record in 10 days for the 31-year-old athlete, the Czech Republic’s first to win two gold medals at a single Olympic Winter Games back in 2010.
Czech speed skater Martina Sáblíková won her fifth combined world
championship title in Calgary on Sunday. The long-distance specialist won
the women’s final 5000-metre race in six minutes, 42 seconds, beating her
own record set in 2011.
The 31-year-old Sáblíková beat her nearest rival Miho Tagaki, in second place, by around 20 seconds to secure the combined title.
The Czech speed skater Martina Sáblíková won the 3,000 meters race at
the World Allround Championships in Calgary on Saturday, improving the
almost 13-year-old world record held by Canadian Cindy Klassen.
The 31-year-old Czech covered the distance in a time of 3.53.31, three hundredths of a second below the time Klassen put down in March 2006.
The three-time Olympic champion also holds the world record on the 5 kilometers, which she set in February 2011 in Salt Lake City with a time of 6.42,66. Sáblíková is currently second in the overall competition, 2.8 seconds behind Miho Tagaki of Japan.
Three times Olympics winner Martina Sáblíková triumphed at the women's 3,000 meters race at the World Speed Skating Championship in Inzell, Germany. It is the fifth world title for Sáblíková in the 3,000 event. The 31-year-old Czech finished with a time of 3 minutes 58.91 seconds, coming ahead of Antoinette de Jong of the Netherlands and Russia’s Natalia Voronina.
Czech speed skater Martina Sablíková has won the silver medal at the
World All-round Speed Skating Championships in Italy’s Collalbo on
Saturday. The long-distance specialist won the women’s final 5,000-meter
race on Saturday and finished second in the overall competition.
Antoinette de Jong of the Netherlands took home the winning title, while Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida finished third. It is the eleventh medal in the ladies’ tournament for the 31-year-old Czech, who has won the championship five times over the course of her career.
