US opera star Renée Fleming will perform a special concert in Prague on
Tuesday celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. She will
appear at the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House with the Prague Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by Elli Jaffe.
Fleming, whose grandparents on one side were born in Prague, first sang in the Czech Republic in 1996. In 2009 she helped mark the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in a show organised by Václav Havel at which Joan Baez and Lou Reed also played.
Alphonse Mucha’s monumental series of paintings The Slav Epic should go on show at an exhibition at Prague’s Municipal House some time next year, a spokesperson for the Prague City Gallery said. The paintings have been placed in the gallery’s depositary after returning from an exhibition in Japan’s Tokyo that was seen by over 650,000 people. There are no plans at present to loan the Slav Epic to other cities outside the Czech Republic. Mucha helped create the interiors of the Art Nouveau Municipal House.
Situated in Prague’s Žižkov district, the Kočičí Kavárna Freya (or Kočkafé) is a cat café, which opened back in 2014, and was the first of its kind in Prague. The phenomenon of the cat café harks back to the late 1990s in Taiwan and Japan, but has now come to the Czech Republic as well. There are seven cats on-hand for customers to interact with here, predominantly from shelters, and this cat café has already attracted significant media attention. I’m going to go and visit inside and meet both the staff and the cats.
Every year Prague City Tourism highlights selected attractions aimed at drawing more visitors to the Czech capital. This year the accent is on “slow tourism” promoting the city’s cafes, restaurants and the best of Czech design.
