Czechia is not famous for making world-class cheese. There is, however, one notable exception: a very peculiar local type of cheese made in Moravia called „Olomoucké tvarůžky" or, more colloquially „tvargle". It has been produced in the region around Olomouc for centuries and is famous for its aromatic smell.
A real Czech pig-killing, beef belly with celery puree and black potatoes, summer fettuccine with calamari and marinated carp with horseradish-dill sauce – all of this can be savoured by visitors to the Festival of Taste food fair now on in Brno. In addition, they can enjoy a variety of goodies from cheeses and pâtés to chocolates.
Monday is the 25th anniversary of the opening of the first branch of the fast food chain McDonald’s in the then Czechoslovakia. An estimated 11,000 people turned up for the opening of the company’s first outlet on Prague’s Vodičkova street on 20 March 1992, iDnes.cz wrote. Visiting McDonald’s was for many a rare treat in the beginning, with hamburgers costing 19 crowns compared to 25 crowns today.
In this special Christmas programme on Radio Prague we are going to be looking at traditional Czech Christmas meals. Later on yours truly will be making his take on the classic Czech-style potato salad. But first, I am joined in the studio by Ladislav Provaan of the Gastronomy Museum, who is an expert in all things culinary.
Tour company Eat With Locals allows visitors to Prague to do just that, taking them to restaurants and cafés they might never find on their own and giving them the lowdown on various aspects of Czech food culture and more. The firm was started last year by Lenka Pavlíčková, who has both a background in business and a deep passion for food and travel. When we spoke at a café on Wenceslas Square, I asked Pavlíčková what kind of people were signing up for the Eat With Locals tours.
