The use of social networks among Czechs has seen a slight drop, according
to a survey conducted by AMI Digital Index.
While last year 80 percent of Internet users in the country went on social networks daily, now their number is at 77 percent and the average time spent on social networks has dropped from 149 to 143 minutes a day.
Although Facebook and You Tube remain the most widely-used social networks, the popularity of Facebook, in particular, is dropping, while the popularity of Instagram is on the rise.
Leading experts on cybersecurity from 32 countries are meeting in Prague at the 5G Security Conference held under the auspices of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. It is hoped that the meeting can produce a series of consensual recommendations on how to approach future cyber threats emerging from the 5G network.
The Czech government wants to impose a seven-percent tax on large digital
companies, such as Facebook and Google. Under the plan, agreed by the
cabinet on Tuesday, the multinational companies would have to pay taxes in
the place they make earnings.
The cabinet is hoping the move could lead to increased revenues of around five billion crowns a year. The Ministry of Finance is due to draft a digital tax bill by the end of May.
Officials at Mělník hospital say a healthy new-born boy was left in their
baby-box on Wednesday evening. According to the founder of the Czech
baby-box system, the boy was in good condition and was given the name
Since the system was introduced in 2005, altogether 188 children unwanted by their parents have been saved through baby-boxes. There are currently 76 such facilities, monitored by doctors, across the Czech Republic,
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has said that citizens and businesses should be able to profit from state online services within the next five years. Furthermore, citizens should be able to rely on online services to support them in the full administration process. The commitment was made on Monday, at the launch of the annual ISSS conference in Hradec Králové which is being attended by more than 2,000 guests from the public and private sectors.
The Czech government has just approved a bill under which the providers of taxi services would no longer be required to use taximeters. Ministers say they want to create a level playing field for operators of app-based services. For their part, traditional taxi firms say the move could lead to major problems.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš says he will not take action against the
minister of industry and trade, Marta Nováková, over comments she made
about mobile data prices. The minister, who was appointed by Mr. Babiš’s
ANO party, attracted a lot of criticism for suggesting that data was
relatively expensive in the Czech Republic because not enough people were
availing of the service, which operators had invested a lot of money in.
Mr. Babiš said Ms. Nováková had expressed herself poorly and that everybody made an unfortunate comment sometimes.
Baby-boxes in the Czech Republic have saved 180 infants since they were
first installed in 2005, the ctk news agency reports citing Statim, the
association that manages them.
This year alone twelve baby girls and six baby boys were left in boxes installed in different parts of the country. 76 such boxes are currently in operation.
Although critics oppose them on the argument that they make it too easy for parents to abandon children, their advocates emphasize the fact that they save babies from being abandoned where they have nil or very low chances of survival.
The app-based ride sharing service Taxify has been banned from operating in
Prague until it meets the conditions required from a regular taxi service.
The Prague Municipal Court ruled on Tuesday that, like Uber, the Estonian company must agree to respect conditions which would put it on an equal footing with taxi drivers, by operating a licensed service, with drivers registering and taxing their earnings in the Czech Republic. Taxify may still appeal the verdict.
The company started operating in the Czech Republic in 2015 and the number of active Taxify drivers is estimated at several hundred.
