A Czech power company has just taken a giant step to become the biggest player in the Slovak energy sector. But the Slovak government appears to have hedged its bets down the road with an option to take back control and make sure two new nuclear reactors are completed.

Around 25-30 years ago small, for some reason mostly blue, mid-sized Czech trucks were the most common haulage vehicles on the country’s motorways. It was clear that they had been mostly made for short journey within the Czech Republic, or former Czechoslovakia, or to neighbouring countries.

The country’s largest sporting goods chain, Sportisimo, is for sale according to financial daily Hospodářské noviny. With almost 100 outlets in the country and dozens more in neighbouring Slovakia and Poland, the owners are reportedly looking for a deal worth an estimated five billion crowns.

The deal that would put Czech company Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH) in the big league of Central European and even European power companies appears on the verge of being realized.

The American e-commerce giant Amazon is aiming to build a new hall in Prague’s Horní Počernice which could be staffed by up to 3,000 employees. Around 1,000 of those, however, would be relocated from an already existing logistics centre in Dobrovíz. The hall would encompass a massive 40,000 square metres in the P3 industrial zone.

The state spending watchdog, the Supreme Audit Office, has issued a report putting the spotlight on ongoing failures how ministries manage the wide variety of companies under their control. In spite of past government resolutions and instructions, clear guidelines and policies are often still lacking with ministries appearing to take an ad hoc approach.

The Czech Republic’s biggest food company has just been eaten up by a Norwegian based rival. The deal still has to be approved by competition offices but this does not look like a major hurdle.

The Czech government is debating the future of the Paskov mine, one of the last deep coal mines in the country, after its owner OKD announced its possible closure at the end of 2016. The mine is one of the biggest employers in the Moravian-Silesian region and its closure would put 1,800 employees and almost as many more doing business with the mine out of work.

Toy sellers expect pre-Christmas sales to hit record numbers this year, reports news website iDnes. The Association for Toy and Play sales suggests sales could be the highest since the economic crisis of 2008.

The Czech headline unemployment rate in November remained at the level of 5.9 percent, according to the figures released by the country’s Labour Office on Tuesday, unchanged from October. This follows a continuous decline over the previous three months. The latest figure still shows the jobless total at its lowest level since March 2009.
