Czech scientists have created artificial DNA that with further development
could help combat disease by replacing problematic strands.
Researchers at the Academy of Sciences and Charles University say that by using chemical reactions, in theory the artificial DNA could be substituted for actual strands of human DNA to halt the advance of various diseases.
Experiments in transferring the light-sensitive, artificial DNA have not yet been carried out on living cells or organisms.
The Czech population grew by almost 40,000 last year to an estimated
10,649,800 people. According to the Czech Statistical Office, as in recent
years, most of the increase stemmed from immigration.
A record 58,148 people moved to the Czech Republic from abroad in 2018 while 19,519 left the country. Ukraine and neighbouring Slovakia were the biggest source countries, followed by Romania and Bulgaria.
The data also show a rise in the number of marriages to an 11-year high. Last year, 114,036 children were born in the country, down by 369 compared to 2017. Of these, 48.5 percent were born out of wedlock.
The population of Prague increased by 14,119 people to almost 1.31 million last year. Of the 40,503 people who moved to the Czech capital in 2018, more than half came from another part of the country. The rest were foreigners, especially Ukrainians, Russians and Slovaks.
The Senate rejected Charles University vice-rector Aleš Gerloch as a
candidate for Constitutional Court judge in a secret ballot on Wednesday.
The law professor had been put forth as a candidate by President Miloš Zeman, who is now expected to suggest another candidate.
Opposition senators object to Mr Gerloch having been a member of the Communist Party. They also say he neglected to note that before 1995 he worked at universities suspected of having improperly awarded politicians and police officials degrees.
Czech Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček (Social Democrats) met his
British counterpart Jeremy Hunt in London on Wednesday to discuss bilateral
relations and the status of Czechs living in the UK following Brexit.
Following the meeting, Minister Petříček tweeted, “Britain is currently our fifth largest export market and among the leading investors in the Czech Republic. We have great potential to strengthen cooperation in the areas of artificial intelligence, cyber security, renewables and nanotechnology.”
In a gesture meant to show good relations will continue, Petříček and Hunt exchanged national football jerseys with their respective surnames on them.
On Tuesday, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened a new Czech Consulate General in Manchester primarily to bring consular services to Czechs living in the northern UK.
Two NHL teams will begin their 2019-20 campaigns overseas. The Philadelphia
Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks will start next season in the Czech capital,
Both teams have Czech-born players on their rosters: Radko Gudas and Jakub Voráček play for the Flyers while Dominik Kahun and David Kampf are with the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks last opened their season in Europe back in 2009, when they played the Florida Panthers in Helsinki, Finland.

The Czech Republic is ready to agree with the United Kingdom’s request to
extend the Brexit deadline of March 29 at the EU Council meeting in
Brussels on Thursday.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said at Wednesday’s European Affairs Committee meeting in Prague the deadline sought would likely extend to June 30. He said he could not imagine any EU Member State would seek to block the summit meeting, which would lead to a no-deal Brexit.
A June 30 deadline would means that the UK would not take part in the European Parliament elections.
Czech carmaker Škoda Auto announced on Wednesday it sold a record 1.254
million vehicles last year, up 4.4 percent in annual terms.
Sales revenue also increased by 4.4 percent compared to the previous year and achieved the best result in its history.
Unconsolidated profit after tax fell 9 percent to CZK 28.89 billion, a drop the Volkswagen Group unit attributed in part to a 22 percent increase in investments into tangible assets last year.
Škoda Auto, the top Czech exporter, invested more than 500 million euros directly in plants and facilities in the Czech Republic in 2018.
Choirs across the Czech Republic are holding concerts on Wednesday as part
of a charity drive called “Sing for UNICEF”.
Proceeds will go towards helping implement a United Nation’s programme aimed at reducing the high infant mortality rate in underdeveloped countries.
At last count, 182 local choirs had joined the effort, with 64 concerts scheduled for Wednesday. It is the biggest project by the local UNICEF branch since its founding in 1991.
