The Czech Ministry of Agriculture wants to introduce fines of up to CZK 50
million for companies that distribute food products in this country that
are of poorer quality than in other EU markets. The minister of
agriculture, Miroslav Toman, said on Monday that products sold in the Czech
Republic in similar wrappings had to have the same ingredients and
Mr. Toman said a new law imposing hefty fines for dual quality could be in place in 12 months. In the past tests have indicated that some products sold in the Czech Republic were inferior to those marketed in states such as Germany and Austria under the same brands.
The majority of Czechs wish to remain in the European Union and are
satisfied with the country’s membership of the bloc, suggests a poll
conducted by Behavio, STEM and Europeum at the turn of the year. Fifty-six
percent of respondents said they were content with Czech membership; a
similar study some years ago found that only around one-third were
satisfied, while in 2018 the figure stood at 45 percent.
Some 11 percent of the population would like the country to quit the EU immediately, the poll indicates. Another 27 percent of those questioned said they would be in favour of leaving if the EU doesn’t undergo reform.

The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Tomáš Petříček, is set to meet
China’s ambassador to Prague in connection with reports that China is
cancelling events involving Czech arts organisations that have the word
Prague in their title.
The Czech minister of culture, Antonín Staněk, said after a meeting in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart that a tour involving the Prague Philharmonia could only go ahead if the ensemble expressed criticism of Prague’s mayor Zdeněk Hřib over statements he made that were not to Beijing’s liking.
Mr. Petříček said he would discuss the matter with Mr. Staněk but that if the reports were true it would be “unfortunate”.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has said he wants to meet with the signatories
of a petition calling for the dismissal of Culture Minister Antonín
Staněk over the sacking of the head of the Czech National Gallery Jiří
Fajt and the head of the Olomouc Museum of Arts Michal Soukup.
The petition was signed by leading Czech artists and heads of cultural institutions. Babiš said on Facebook he had received assurances from the culture minister that there were valid reasons for the sackings.
The culture minister’s decision was also questioned by Social Democratic Party deputy chair Roman Onderka, who criticized the fact that the minister had failed to inform his party’s leadership about his intention.
He said that unless the minister produced a satisfactory explanation the party leadership would consider his dismissal.
