Interior minister requests meeting of National Security Council

Interior Minister Milan Chovanec has requested a meeting of the National Security Council in connection with the allegations of corruption surrounding the state-owned company Czech Post, which falls under the Interior Ministry, and himself. Minister Chovanec requested the meeting citing a threat to the economic interests of the state-owned company and efforts to destabilize the situation at the Interior Ministry. The allegations of corruption, according to which a member of the Social Democratic Party requested a 3 million crown bribe, of which one million was to be for Minister Chovanec himself, appeared on the internet news site neovlivni.cz. The minister has rejected the allegations and is filing charges of slander. The matter is being investigated by the police. The meeting of the National Security Council is to be held on Thursday.

Three police officers injured in rioting during Baník Ostrava-Zlín football game

Three police officers were injured in rioting during Saturday’s football game between Baník Ostrava and Zlín, a police spokeswoman said on Sunday. The game at the Zlín football stadium had to be interrupted when visiting fans started throwing bits of stadium seats and smoke grenades on the pitch. Thirteen fans are reported to have been detained in connection with the violence. Police are inspecting footage from security cameras.

War drama Anthropoid being shot in Prague

The British-US-French co-production of the war drama Anthropoid is currently being shot in Prague. The film, based on the true story of two Czechoslovak paratroopers sent to assassinate Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich in 1942, started shooting in late July. British writer-director Sean Ellis is now directing the film’s crucial scenes outside the church of Cyril and Methodius in Prague’s Resslova street where the assassins hid until they were tracked down by the SS, leading to a final, desperate gun battle. The film, staring Jamie Dornan, is to hit cinema houses in 2016.

Agriculture Ministry wants to extend hunting season for wild boar

The Agriculture Ministry has proposed extending the hunting season for wild boar and deer as a means of regulating their population levels. In the past few years the wild boar has overbred and is said to be causing extensive agricultural damage. Under the ministry’s proposal wild boar could be hunted all year round, deer from mid-August until the end of March. Around 180,000 wild boars are hunted down annually, but the population of around 60 thousand specimen remains stable.The proposed bill is being assesed by experts.

Three firemen taken to hospital after getting hit by lightening

Three firemen were taken to hospital on Saturday after getting hit by lightening while they were felling a tree damaged by a heavy storm. All three are reported to be out of danger. The incident happened in the Zlin region, in Moravia, where heavy storms, coming in the wake of the heatwave, caused widespread damage. Fire crews in the region were called to 50 emergencies.

Concert of famous film scores to open Špilberk summer music festival

A concert of famous film melodies is to open the Špilberk summer music festival on Sunday evening. Visitors will be able to hear famous scores from Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Magnificent Seven and Pirates of the Caribbean. The opening concert will be performed by the Janacek Philharmonic Ostrava and conducted by Heiko Mathias Förster.

Lorenzo wins Brno GP

Jorge Lorenzo capped a dominant weekend at Brno with victory in the Czech MotoGP, drawing level with Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi in the riders' championship. With his fifth victory of the season, Lorenzo draws level with Rossi atop the standings, with reigning world champion Marquez 52 points behind them. Czech rider Jakub Kornfeil came ninth.
