Ruling coalition members the Christian Democrats are losing patience with Finance Minister Andrej Babiš' over a statement suggesting that opposition parties in Parliament would have to "get used" to being disregarded or ignored. Christian Democrat leader Pavel Bělobrádek made clear on a Sunday political debate programme that his party would accept no such approach. Mr Bělobrádek has taken issue with a proposal which would cut question period in the lower house, which most see as an essential democratic tool holding the government to account. The Christian Democrat slammed Mr Babiš saying that if democracy didn't suit him - or if he didn't want to be in a coalition with democratic parties - it was up to him to "consider leaving".
Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Bělobradek has said that his colleague in government Finance Minister Andrej Babiš pledged a planned electronic cash register system will work or he would step down. The Finance Ministry wants the system to go into operation in the middle of next year. According to the deputy prime minister, the Finance Ministry has said once passed by legislators, it could have the system up and running within seven months. The centre-right opposition has come out strongly against the system and said it will fight the proposal.
The Czech economy will expand by 4.3 percent this year and by 2.6 percent in 2016, consulting company Ernst &Young has said in its latest forecast. Other financial institutions are predicting a rise of over 4 percent for the current year as well. Czech growth will be bigger than the euro zone´s. The noted consulting firm put expansion in the euro area at 1.6 percent this year and at 1.8 percent next year. "Investment will be the fastest-growing component of GDP thanks to public expenditures," said Jan Fanta, a managing partner of corporate consulting and risk management at the firm.
A 56-year-old man died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run in the region of Liberec in the early hours of Saturday the police have revealed. Medics attempted but failed to resuscitate the man after he was discovered on the road at around 1:30 AM. Investigators say the driver, who did not stop but drove away from the scene, was behind the wheel of an SUV, possibly a Toyota. The police have appealed for any possible witnesses to come forward.
The 125th Velká Pardubická steeplechase was won on Sunday by10-year-old gelding Nikas, ridden by by jockey Marek Stromský. Stromský, 41, triumphed in the 6,900 metre race on his 13th attempt.
Czech hockey legend Jaromír Jágr scored two goals in the Florida Panthers' 7:1 season opener over the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL on Saturday. Others who notched up points in other match-ups were Milan Michálek, who scored in the Ottawa Senators 5:4 win over Toronto, and Tomáš Plekanec who got his 500th career point in the Montreal Canadiens' 4:2 defeat of the Boston Bruins.
The Czech national football team suffered its first loss at home in Euro 2016 qualifying on Saturday night. Fans had hoped to celebrate the team's overall successful campaign (the Czech Republic had clinched a berth in the championship earlier). Instead, home spirits were dampened when Turkey got on the scoreboard in the second half, twice beating goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík. The first goal came on a penalty. Turkey now has a strong chance of reaching Euro 2016, while Netherland's hopes hang by a thread. The Czechs face the Dutch national squad on Tuesday.
