Industry and Trade Minister holds talks with president Zeman at Lány Chateau

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Jiří Havlíček, has held discussions with Czech president Miloš Zeman and the team of his advisors. During their four-hour talks, they were discussing the law on electronic communication or the law that would enable operators to reduce the cost of deploying communication networks. The legislation is set to be to be debated by the lawmakers. Among other topics on the agenda was the operation of the Czech Export Bank and state export insurer EGAP, Mr Havlíček told journalists after the meeting on Saturday.

Several dozen people protest against NATO in Prague

Several dozen people gathered on Wenceslas Square in the centre of Prague on Saturday to protest against the NATO and against the Czech Republic’s membership in the alliance. The event was organised by the Czech Peace Movement organisation in connection with the upcoming NATO summit in Brussels. Among those who attended the meeting were Communist MPs Marta Semelová and Stanislav Grospič.

Over 40,000 people attended open day at Čáslav airbase

Over 40,000 people turned out for the open day at Čáslav military airport in Central Bohemia on Saturday. The event, which takes place every two years, marked the 60th anniversary since the introduction of jet aircraft at the base. Among the highlights of the programme was the performance of the Swiss Patrouille Suisse aerobatic team flying the F-5E Tiger II fighters. It was the first performance of the team in the Czech Republic.

Czech footballer David Bystroň commits suicide

Czech football player David Bystroň, who previously played defence for FC Viktoria Pilsen and Baník Ostrava, has commited suicide. The 34-year-old footballer has hanged himself in his house. It is the second Czech football player to kill himself in recent weeks. His former teammate from FC Viktoria Pilsen, František Rajtorál, committed suicide in April. In 2012, Bystroň tested positive for doping in 2012 and was banned from playing for two years. He ended his professional career two years later.

Martin Fuksa wins gold in 1000m at Canoe Sprint World Championships

The Czech Republic’s Martin Fuksa has won gold in the 1,000 metres event at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Portugal’s Montemoru-o-Velho on Saturday. The 24-year old Czech finished more than 11 seconds ahead of Olega Tarnovschi of Moldova.

Over 20,000 took part in 52nd Prague Prčice march

Over 20,500 people turned out for the 52nd march between Prague and the central Bohemian town of Prčice on Saturday. Participants can take part in 16 different walks, the longest of which is 70 kilometres log. The traditional event, which takes place on the third weekend in May, enjoyed its heyday in the 1980s when around 30,000 took part.
