Czech Republic best prepared country in Central Europe to withstand shock developments

The Czech Republic is the best placed country in Central Europe to reacted to unexpected global, political, or economic developments according to a ranking drawn up by the consultancy company KPMG. The ranking place the Czech Republic 25th in the world in terms of preparedness. The best placed countries were Switzerland, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates. The Czech Republic improved three places compared with its standing when the survey was last carried out.

Hop growers lack pickers as summer season nears

Organisers of hop pickers for the upcoming season due to start in the second half of August say there are still short of workers. Chmelda, one of the organisations specialising in recruitment reported the shortage to the Czech News Agency. In spite of technological advances, hundreds of extra pickers were essential to the annual harvest recruiters said. One recruiter said the situation surrounding the summer season was the worst she could remember.

Slavia Prague and Viktoria Plzeň kick season off with wins

In football, the two top clubs from the past season began the new one with wins. Title holders Slavia Prague won 1:0 against Teplice thanks to a controversial penalty. Viktoria Plzeň won 4: against Dukla Prague. Sparta Prague, the who lost their Europa League qualifying first leg game against Crvene Zvezda Belgrade 2:0, have a derby against Bohemians 1904 on Sunday night.

Heaven Labs eyes expansion on US market

The Czech start- up Heaven Labs says it is going to expand in the US with planned production and storage for its energy drink Mana. The company this year expects turnover of 200 million crowns, twice the level of 2016. It already exports to 26 countries with exports accounting for 27 percent of sales. the biggest export demand currently comes from Germany. Transport is offered free to foreign buyers. The expansion in the US is taking time due to administrative procedures.

Krejčiková loses in Bastad doubles final

In tennis, Czech player Barbora Krejčiková lost in the doubles final of the Bastad open with partner Maria Irigoyen. Opponents Quirine Lemoine and Arantxe Rus won 3:6, 6:3, 10:8. Twenty-one year old Krejčiková was looking for her second WTA doubles triumph.

Wolf cubs fresh evidence of thriving population north of Prague

More evidence has emerged of a thriving wolf population to the north of Prague in the Kokořín natural reserve. Recent photo traps show images of four healthy young wolves which were apparently born this year to a pack that has established itself in the area. It is not entirely clear where young cubs have migrated in previous years and whether they have stayed in the Czech Republic or moved across the border into Germany or Poland.
