Plane with Czech humanitarian aid for China sent from Vienna

A plane with Czech humanitarian aid for China took off from Vienna on Sunday, foreign minister Tomáš Petříček informed on is Twitter account. The Czech Republic sent 4.5 tonnes of medical equipment to tackle the coronavirus epidemic in the country, including in facemasks, respirators, latex gloves, disinfectants and protective medical uniforms. The consignment was shipped on a plane together with aid from other EU members states.

The government on Monday approved the sending of another humanitarian aid consignment with over seven tonnes of medical equipment, which should be transported to China on an army plane at the end of the month.

Czech boy falls to death in Austrian Alps

A six-year-old Czech boy succumbed to fatal injuries after a fall in the Austrian Alps on Saturday evening, the APA agency reported.

The boy slipped and fell from about 60 meters onto rocky terrain while descending the Drachenwand mountain by Lake Mondsee with his parents and a family friend.

According to the mountain rescue service, the Drachenwand ferrata trail is very difficult and it is only suitable for adults.

Unseasonably mild weather set to continue in coming weeks

Temperatures in the Czech Republic should remain considerably higher than average for the time of year in the next four weeks. The long-term average for the period from February 24 to March 22 is 2.7 degrees Celsius but in the next fortnight we can expect day-time highs of around 9 degrees Celsius.

Despite the unseasonably warm weather, mountain areas could see some fresh snow in the next two weeks. According to a long-term forecast issued by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute, precipitation will be average for the time of year.

Ledecká comes third in World Cup combined event in Crans-Montana

Czech Ester Ledecká came third in a World Cup combined event in Switzerland’s Crans Montana on Sunday. The 24-year-old came fourth in the super-G and sixth in the slalom. It is the third time Ledecká reached the podium in a World Cup skiing event. The winner was Italian Federica Brignone, who currently leads the World Cup overall standings.

Strýcová reclaims Dubai doubles title

Czech Barbora Strýcová and her doubles partner Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan have defended their doubles title at the Dubai championships, scoring their second trophy of the season.

The top-seeded duo defeated the Czech-Chinese couple Barbora Krejčíková and Zheng Saisai 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 in a nearly two-hour match in Saturday, reaching their seventh joint title.
