Czechs lose to Spain in final of tennis’s Davis Cup

The Czech men’s tennis team have lost to Spain in the final of the Davis Cup in Barcelona. On Friday the Czechs fell 2:0 behind on matches when Tomáš Berdych was beaten by Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer overcame Radek Štěpánek. That meant that Berdych and Štěpánek needed to win the doubles rubber on Saturday in order to keep Czech hopes of winning the tournament alive. However, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco took the match in three sets, giving Spain an unassailable lead in the best-of-five final. The Czechs last won the Davis Cup in 1980, when their country was part of Czechoslovakia.
