Over 330 tons of food and 52 tons of dry goods were donated to Czech charities and NGOs in the National Food Collection held this weekend. That is the best result since the tradition was launched seven years ago. The goods will be distributed among the country’s close to 24,000 homeless people and the 1.5 million living on the poverty line.
Czech farmers say that sales of eight major agricultural commodities should
rise by almost CZK 2 billion this year to reach over CZK 90 billion. More
cereals and potatoes have been harvested this year but the rape crop was
down on 2018.
The Agricultural Association of the Czech Republic said the overall sales figure for this year should be above the average recorded since the year 2000.
On Friday people all around the Czech Republic began celebrating Saint Martin’s Day, which falls on November 11. According to a Czech proverb, it is the day which brings the first snow to the country. In recent years, however, the day has mostly been associated with the arrival of the season’s first wine and with the traditional feast of roast goose.

legislation to fight drought, concludes a report by the Supreme Audit
Office (NKU) carried out at the ministries of agriculture and environment.
The report also says there are not enough grant programmes focusing on the problem of drought, with the exception of Dešťovka, a programme encouraging households to save water by using rain water storage.
According to the Supreme Audit Office, damages caused by drought last year amounted to 24 billion crowns. Minister of the Environment Richard Brabec (ANO) categorically rejected the findings, saying ‘thousands of anti-drought projects’ are in place.
