The US online retailer Amazon officially launched the construction of its distribution centre in Dobrovíz near Prague on Friday. The centre, which should be completed by the end of June 2015, will create some 2,000 jobs. Amazon was originally also planning to build another distribution centre in a Brno industrial zone, but the plans have been rejected by Brno City Hall over zoning issues. The US Internet giant is now looking for other locality in Central and Eastern Europe.
The number of Czech limited companies owned by women has risen sharply over the past several years, according to an analysis by the consultancy firm Bisnode. While in 2012, 15 percent of such firms registered in the Czech Republic had women owners, this year there are 24 percent of them, according to Bisnode analyst Petra Štepánová. However, a majority of Czech limited companies – 71 percent of them – are owned by men.
Agriculture Minister Marian Jurečka said on Monday that should the EC fail to help farmers and food producers hit by the EU sanctions against Russia, the Czech Republic might ban the imports of goods for dumping prices. Czech farmers and food producers fear that the expected glut of food products in Europe stemming from the sanctions might result in the Czech market being flooded with goods sold for prices below production costs.
Intensive negotiations are underway to try to cushion the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on Czech exporters. The Agriculture Ministry has estimated this year’s loses at around 300 million crowns while the Confederation of Industry is talking about billion crown losses due to disappearing contracts, problematic funding and heightened competition from Asian exporters on the Russian market.
