The annual Czech Press Photo competition, which evaluates both professional and amateur journalistic photographs from around the world, has selected the winners of the 2017 competition. And for the first time, the winner is a photograph taken not with an expensive camera, but with a simple cell phone.
Czech Foreign Minister Lubomír Zaorálek and Israeli Ambassador to the Czech Republic David Meron on Thursday opened an exhibition recalling the contribution of Czechoslovakia’s first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and his son, Jan, who later became foreign minister, to the creation of the State of Israel. I spoke with Ambassador Meron during the exhibition launch at Černín Palace and first asked how the idea for such an exhibition arose.

Designblok, Prague International Design Festival opened today Prague. The festival, now in its ninetheenth year, boasts that it is the largest showcase of fashion and design in Central Europe. The event is mainly based in the historic Výstaviště Praha exhibition grounds, and will feature the works of 304 designers, this year guided by the overarching theme of food. I spoke with Bára Švehlová, PR manager for the event, and began by asking her to explain the theme of this year’s Designblok:
The Czech National Museum is preparing a major joint exhibition with the
Slovak National Museum to mark the centenary in 2018 of the foundation of
Czechoslovakia, the news site iDnes.cz reported. The exhibition will open
in Bratislava before transferring to Prague in October.
The show will focus on Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and other important figures in Czechoslovakia’s foundation but will also feature the stories of ordinary citizens.
The joint exhibition will be just one of a number of events in 2018 marking not only the centenary of Czechoslovakia but also the 50th anniversary of the Soviet-led invasion and 25 years since the formation of the independent Czech Republic.
An exhibition mapping the history of six panelak housing estates in Prague got underway on Thursday at the city’s Dejvice district. It is the last in a series of fourteen exhibitions dedicated to the communist-era prefabricated apartment blocks around the Czech Republic, prepared by the Museum of Creative Arts.
An exhibition about the famous Tugendhat Villa by Mies van der Rohe is currently on display in the City of Prague Museum. The travelling exhibition on the history of the UNESCO landmark was prepared by the Villa Tugendhat Study and Documentation Centre and has already made 25 stops around the world, including the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, or the Bohemian National Hall in Manhattan.
