The Gypsy MaMa fashion brand is the work of a Czech NGO which has been very active in helping to improve the living conditions of several thousand Romanies living in one of the country’s biggest socially excluded areas known as the Brno “Bronx”. Gypsy MaMa was established to help young Romanies get a foothold on the labour market by harnessing their creative potential and giving them work experience. I spoke to the project manager of the NGO Tripitaka, Zdeněk Raiser, about its goals and ambitions.
Czech interest in booking holidays in Tunisia and Egypt has been increasing. According to Czech tour operators, bookings to Egypt for September and October have increased by 50 percent compared with the same period last year, while bookings to Tunisia grew by 14 percent. The interest in Turkey, however, is low due to the security reasons. Greece still remains the most popular destination of Czech tourists. The average prices of last-minute September holiday tours are around 3000 crowns cheaper than in the summer.
The government agency CzechTourism has long promoted the Czech Republic as a Land of Stories for foreign visitors but more and more Czechs themselves are choosing to vacation here rather than going abroad. By current estimates, this summer will see a million more Czechs spending their holidays in their own country.

Královské (Royal) Cookie is a shop on Prague’s Vinohradská St. with a number of regal connections. The district has traditionally been known as Royal Vinohrady and, says UK-born co-owner Steve Gray, there is also a link between the business and the Queen of England. The Czech Institute of Sociology has recently published results of a survey, which look at how Czechs spend their daily lives. It focuses on such topics as housing choices, inequalities, education, and the labour market. One of the authors of this long-term household survey is an Irish sociologist Pat Lyons, who has been based in the Czech Republic for more than a decade.
