Stanislav Tišer, a former Czechoslovak bantamweight champion boxer now in his early sixties, has been running a Prague boxing club for over 25 years. Thousands of young people – many with troubled backgrounds – have found much need support, discipline and direction under his wings. A decade ago, Tišer received the Fair Play award from the Czech Olympic Committee for his sportsmanship and in March was named an EDUín Prize winner for his work with youth.
His father is a Vietnamese businessman and he was born here in the Czech Republic. Thai Dai Van Nguyen is one of many second-generation Vietnamese who are fluent is Czech, as in other foreign languages, hard-working, disciplined and ambitious. At just 16 Van became the youngest chess grandmaster in the Czech Republic and less than two years later he is among the five best players in Europe in his age group. I asked him how his success story began.
On average Czech women only reached the same amount of pay as Czech men
earned in 2018 on March 17, making Sunday Equal Pay Day, according to the
group Business & Professional Women ČR. Female employees in the Czech
Republic earn one-fifth less than male ones and would have to work for over
14 months to make the same amount that men do in 12.
The Czech Republic ranks among the EU states with the widest pay gap between the genders. The difference is greatest among university graduates, Business & Professional Women ČR said, citing official government data.

Three MPs have quit Tomio Okamura’s Freedom and Direct Democracy Party.
Lubomír Volný, Marian Bojko and Ivana Nevludová were all elected in the
Moravian Silesian Region. Mr. Volný said the move was in protest at the
fact that the party had allowed racists and neo-Nazis to enter its ranks.
He has rejected a call from Freedom and Direct Democracy to also resign
from his seat in the Chamber of Deputies.
Mr. Volný is a controversial figure who in the past called Václav Havel a traitor, criticised the Erasmus scheme for students and offered to “take outside” a dispute with another MP during a lower house session. Soon after he announced that he would challenge Mr. Okamura for the party chairmanships his local branch was dissolved.
A Czech non-profit organisation based in Brno has developed a special mobile phone application for drug users and people living on the streets. Called Čára or Line, it will help them find accommodation, food or free needle exchange. The app, reported to be the first of its kind in Europe, has just been launched for a trial run.
The German government said in a parliamentary session that members of
domestic far-right groups have in recent years been traveling to Central
and Eastern Europe to train with firearms.
