Slovan Liberec won the Czech football title after a 0:0 tie against runners up Viktoria Plzeň in the final round of the top division. Defending champions Plzeň needed a win to clinch the title but failed to convert several good opportunities, and finished third in the league table, three points behind the champions. Sparta Prague beat České Budějovice 3:0 in the final round and finished second. Two Prague teams, Bohemians 1905 and Viktoria Žižkov, are relegated to the second top division.
London football club Chelsea, together with star Czech goalie Petr Čech, won the FA Cup on Saturday, defeating rivals Liverpool by a score of 2-1. It is the fourth time in six years that Chelsea clinched the championship and this year has marked a remarkable turn-around for the team, which has struggled to otherwise remain among the top five or so teams in the English Premier League. Later in May, the club will play Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League.
Sigma Olomouc beat Sparta Prague 1:0 on Wednesday night to win the Czech FA cup. The cup final, played in Plzeň, saw the only goal two minutes into the second half when Olomouc defender Michal Vepřek threw the ball in on the left side, got it back and made his way into the box where he produced a hard shot to the far corner. The win sweetens the season for Olomouc who had nine points taken away from them over match-fixing. For their part, Sparta might wrap the season empty handed as their chances of winning the league are growing thinner.
Sparta Prague on Wednesday handed a fine of 250,000 crowns, or more than 13,000 US dollars, to their Cameroonian midfield Martin Abena for missing sessions. The 25-year-old player, who has only appeared in one game this season, missed five sessions in March, club management said. Martin Abena’s lawyer said the fine was too big, and asked the club for further details.
Commenting on Chelsea’s Champions League second-leg semifinal against Barcelona, the London team’s goalkeeper Petr Čech said he was “perfectly prepared” for a penalty kick by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. The Argentine star missed the shot which led Barcelona’s elimination after a 2:2 draw. Pert Čech said his team had a clear strategy; in the case of a penalty, Čech was to “wait until the last moment and not make it easy by moving. I picked the right side and he hit the post”. Petr Čech will play in the Champions League final for the second time in his career.

Czech football league champions Viktoria Plzeň will have an opportunity
on Sunday to get within striking distance of retaining their title, if

third-place team currently is four points behind leaders Sparta, and three
behind Liberec. At the weekend, Sparta will face Teplice, in 7th spot,
