Thursday evening saw ice hockey's New York Rangers open their series against Atlanta in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers got on the board with the first goal coming from star forward Jarmoir Jagr. The Rangers hung on to eventually win 4:3. Curiously, after the game Jagr expressed disappointment he had been the first on his team to score: he suggested it brought him bad luck. He also scored first for the Rangers in the regular season, but then found himself struggling.

On Sunday Detroit downed Columbus 4:1, with the Blue Jackets spoiling Dominik Hasek's bid for a 76th career shutout with only around one minute remaining. Hasek made 31 saves on the night. The Red Wings have now earned points in six straight games to surpass Buffalo in the race for top spot.

The game was a "must-win" for Colorado as the regular NHL season draws closer to wrapping up. Colorado still have a slim chance of making the playoffs to compete for the Stanley Cup. Currently the team trails Calgary - in the final playoff spot in the Western Conference - by 7 points. Colorado has five games left to play.
