Czech star goaltender Dominik Hasek, still showing top form at age 42, agreed to terms Friday with the Detroit Red Wings on a new one-year National Hockey League contract. The deal, reportedly worth more than two million dollars, makes the six-time Vezina Trophy winner as top NHL netminder a Red Wing for his 15th NHL season.

Czechs take three golds at the kayak slalom World Cup in Prague; goaltender Dominik Hasek is close to singing a new contract with Detroit Red Wings while his brother, footballer Martin Hasek, is retiring. Midfielder Vladimir Smicer is likely to sign with Slavia Prague as well as start his new TV career. Cyclist Pavel Padrnos will not be taking part in this year's Tour de France, while in athletics, Katerina Badurova overcomes the Czech pole vault record at the Golden Spike in Ostrava.

Lukas Pesek sees disappointing 18th place in 125cc British Grand Prix; in ice hockey, 19 year-old Jakub Voracek was the first European chosen in this year's NHL draft; goalie Tomas Vokoun is headed for Florida after 9 years with the Nashville Predators; and, English jockey Paul Eddery has won the 87th Czech Derby at Prague's famous Chuchle racetrack.

With the temperatures soaring to 30 degrees in the Czech capital these days, ice hockey is probably the furthest thing from many peoples' minds, mopping their foreheads at work, ticking off the days before their holidays start. All of the year's big tournaments have wrapped up and the Czechs didn't do too well in any: at the Ice Hockey World Championship in May they struggled through three losses before finally giving up the ghost.
