The Czech Republic is one of five candidates for the World Ice Hockey Championships in 2014, it was announced on Wednesday. The Czechs, who unsuccessfully applied to hold the contest in 2013, are up against Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary and Latvia for 2014’s championships. The Czech Republic last hosted the tournament in 2004, and should the 2014 bid succeed, then the competition would be staged in Prague for the 10th time in history. The host of the 2014 championships will be announced next year in Switzerland.
It isn’t an unusual practice: a well-known sports celebrity sets up a line of sports clothing. From a marketing perspective, the idea seems perfect: capitalize on the name-recognition of said sportsperson and either open a bar, sports-shop or even set up a line of clothing. Legendary Czech ice-hockey player František Tikal has died just days after his 75 birthday following a long illness. Mr Tikal played during the 1950s and 60s and was regarded at the time as one of the best defenders in the game. He represented his country in seven world championships and two Olympic Games and also played for the Prague teams Sparta and Tankista Praha.
One man was killed in a four-vehicle collision near Hradec Kralové on Thursday morning. The news website novinky.cz reported that the crash – involving two cars, a truck and a van – may have been caused by former Czech ice hockey international Ladislav Lubina. Police were reported to be searching for Mr Lubina, who fled the scene. The man who died is believed to have been the father of former football international Vratislav Lokvenc.
