In NHL ice hockey action on Thursday defenseman Michal Rozsival helped his
team the New York Rangers by scoring the second goal in the Rangers' 2:0
win over Washington.
In other games: seasoned forward Martin Rucinsky notched up his first goal of the season for St Louis over Minnesota, as did Martin Erat for Nashville. Nashville won 3:0 over Vancouver.
The Atlanta Thrashers won their first win of the season in the National
Hockey League on Thursday, defeating the New York Rangers 5:3. Assists by
New York players Jaromir Jagr and Michal Rozsival weren't enough to keep
the Rangers in the match.
In other ice hockey action, the Maple Leaf's Pavel Kubina and Tomas Kaberle assisted on their team's winning goal against Florida; in the match the Leafs downed the Panthers by a score of 3:2.
After a weaker start, Czech ice hockey goalie Tomas Vokoun helped his team the Florida Panthers to their first victory in the new NHL season. Vokoun stopped all 29 shots by the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, earning the 22nd shutout of his career. Czech Rostislav Olesz scored the game's opening goal, assisted by compatriot Radek Dvorak. The Panthers ended up winning the game 3:0.
Tomas Plekanec scored his first goal for the Montreal Canadiens in NHL ice hockey action on Wednesday, helping lift his team 3:2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The player, a 20 goal-scorer last season, scored a game-tying goal in a game that was the NHL debut of the Canadiens' rookie goaltender Carey Price. The game-winner was then scored by Russian team mate Andrei Markov. The Canadiens have now won two and lost once in overtime in the first three match-ups of the season.
Ice hockey's Detroit Red Wings, home to Czech goalie Dominik Hasek, demolished Jaromir Jagr's New York Rangers in an NHL preseason match on Tuesday. Hasek's Red Wings went up 1:0 just 28 seconds into the game. Hasek made 18 saves for Detroit in the game, allowing the Rangers' lone goal with less than three minutes left. Jarmoir Jagr assisted on the goal, which was scored by Scott Gomez.
