Montreal Canadiens forward Tomáš Plekanec scored his 19th goal of the season in the NHL on Thursday but it wasn’t enough to help his team defeat the New York Islanders. His goal in the second period gave the Habs the go-ahead (3:2), but the Islanders were able to tie in the 3rd and won on penalties. In productivity Plekanec is only one point behind current top Czech player Martin Havlát.
The Czech national hockey team lost 6:1 to Sweden in Stockholm on Thursday, in another leg of the Euro Hockey Tour. The Czechs were only able keep up with the hosts in the first period when Petr Průcha scored the Czech team’s only goal. But serious flaws in defense allowed the Swedes to build an unassailable lead. The Czechs were missing some key players but showed one of their worst performances this season. The Czech national team will play Finland and Russia over the weekend.
Jaromír Jágr and Roman Červenka, Czech forwards with the KHL side Avantgard Omsk, both hit the net in Wednesday’s game Khabarovsk, ensuring a 3:2 win for Omsk, the club’s 14th consecutive victory. Červenka scored both the first and the winning goal, and was both times assisted by Jágr who put in the second goal. Červenka is the league’s top scorer with 31 goals.
Litvínov coach Robert Reichel has stepped down over a series of poor results. On Sunday, the club announced that 54-year-old Vladimír Kýhos will replace Mr Reichel, 39, who was on the Czech national team that won gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics. Litvínov, ranking 11th in the top Czech hockey division, are four points behind the 10th place that ensures a spot in the playoffs qualifying round.

Four Czech players will appear in the starting line-ups of the All Star game of the Kontinetal Hockey League that will take place in St Petersburg in early February. The league’s Eastern Division team, dubbed Team Jágr, will feature star Czech forward Jaromír Jágr, from Avantgard Omsk, along with his teammates Roman Červenka and defender Martin Škoula. The Western Conference team will feature goalie legend Dominik Hašek, from Spartak Moscow.
Czech forward Petr Vampola scored a goal on Tuesday in his first game for Russia’s Avantagard Omsk, in a Kontinental Hockey League match against Ufa. Assisted by Jaromír Jágr, Vampola hit the net in the 25th minute, putting his team ahead at 2:1 before another Czech in Omsk’s line-up, Martin Škoula, scored ten minutes later. In the rest of the game, Ufa only managed to score once, setting the final score at 3:2.
