The Czech team also ended fifth at the previous under 20 world championships in Canada last year.

Czech hockey forward Matěj Beran, a member of the national team at the U20 World Championship, has received a one game suspension. The player will miss the junior team's match against Latvia on Sunday. The IIHF Disciplinary Panel reached the decision after reviewing a high-sticking penalty and cross-check by player delivered against Finn Joel Armia in their match on Friday. The panel called the actions displayed by the player “careless and dangerous”. In the championship the Czechs have so far won and lost once.
The Czech under-20 hockey team beat Finland 3:1 in their second match at the World Junior Hockey Championship in the Russian city of Ufa. The victory gave them their first three points at the championship. The young Czechs lost to the defending champions from Sweden on Wednesday. On Sunday, they will face the Latvian team, which is considered to be the weakest one of the group.
More than 4,000 fans attended a Christmas Eve hockey game between the KHL’s Lev Praha and Bars Kazan in the capital on Monday. The hosts lost the match 2:0 after conceding both goals within one minute in the first period. The atmosphere was described as quiet, with many Russian fans attending the game.
