Czech forward Tomáš Plekanec has helped the Montreal Canadiens to get off to their best season start since 1977-78, scoring five goals in six games. On Saturday, the forward scored to make it 3:1 against the Detroit Red Wings with only 2:04 left in the third period. The Habs added an empty-net goal to clinch their sixth win in six games. Plekanec recently signed a new two-year extension on his contract with Montreal worth a reported 12 million dollars which will keep him with the Canadiens through 2017-18.
In the NHL on Sunday, Czech forward Tomáš Plekanec scored twice in the Montreal Canadiens' win over the Ottawa Senators. The final score was 3:1. On the first goal, coming in the first ten minutes, Plekanec fired a cheeky sharp angle shot which hit the back of rookie goaltender Matthew O’Connor’s skate before ricocheting into the net. The result means Montreal are three-for-three in the new season.
Czech hockey legend Jaromír Jágr scored two goals in the Florida Panthers' 7:1 season opener over the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL on Saturday. Others who notched up points in other match-ups were Milan Michálek, who scored in the Ottawa Senators 5:4 win over Toronto, and Tomáš Plekanec who got his 500th career point in the Montreal Canadiens' 4:2 defeat of the Boston Bruins.
This Wednesday marks 25 years since Czech hockey legend Jaromír Jágr scored his first NHL goal. On October 7, 1990, he beat Chris Terreri – then-goalie for the New Jersey Devils. Jágr has since scored an additional 721 regular season goals and will no doubt add more in his 22nd season. What’s more, the forward has promised to grow back the famous mullet hairstyle he sported when he first joined the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In ice hockey, Czech forward Martin Erat has signed a one year contract to play in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Russian club Omsk. The 34 year old, after 13 years competing in the NHL, has been without a club since the end of the last season when he played for Arizona. The new deal means that there will now be four Czech players on the Avangard Omsk roster. Erat was in the Czech squad at the World Championships being hosted by Prague and Ostrava earlier this year.
Close to two dozen ice hockey players from the NHL are due to attend informal meetings in Prague and Brno with the new Czech national team coach Vladimír Vůjtek and his assistants in the next two weeks. Vůjtek, who is 68, was appointed in June following the resignation of Vladimír Růžička, who has been accused of bribe taking. Among the NHL players set to meet his replacement in Prague on Monday is New Jersey’s Patrik Eliáš.
