A father and son management duo will for the first time lead a top Czech ice hockey club into action on Friday night. Miloš Řiha was appointed manager of Pardubice mid-week and the 56-year-old appointed his son, also called Miloš, as assistant. Pardubice, in seventh place in the league, host on Sparta Prague, in third, at their home arena.
New Jersey’s Patrik Eliáš clinched his 1,000th point on Tuesday evening, scoring against Buffalo. He became only the second Czech hockey player to ever reach the milestone, after Jaromír Jágr, who is on 1780 points. In terms of how his points break down, Eliáš has amassed 399 goals and 601 assists over the course of his career in the NHL.
Former Czechoslovak ice hockey and soccer international Vlastimil Bubník has died at the age of 83. Bubník was part of the ice hockey team that took bronze at the 1964 Winter Olympics and earned three World Championship medals. He played for Brno ice hockey club as well as the football club RH Brno. Between 1957 and 1960 he made 11 appearances for Czechoslovakia’s soccer team, including at the European Nations’ Cup, scoring four goals.
Czech ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr has become the oldest player to score three goals in one game in the NHL. Jágr, who turns 43 in the middle of next month, scored the hat trick for New Jersey against Philadelphia on Saturday to take the age record from Gordie Howe. The Kladno-born right wing is the last player drafted in 1990 to be still active in the NHL.
The Czech Republic have been knocked out of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship in Canada after being beaten 3:0 by Slovakia in the quarter-finals on Friday. It was the Czech under 20s third exit in a row at the last eight stage of the competition. The result means they have now failed to take a medal in the competition 10 times in succession.
Czech legendary forward Jaromír Jágr helped the New Jersey Devils sink the favoured Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night in the National Hockey League, scoring once on three shots and afterwards being named the game’s first star. The Devils ended a three-game losing streak and Jágr got his first points after five games. The Devils are in 14th position in the Eastern Conference and a lowly 26th in the league overall while Pittsburgh are fifth.
