Boston Bruins’forward David Krejčí was named third star of the month of October in the National Hockey League, behind Dallas’ Jamie Benn and Montreal goalie Carey Price. The Czech centre racked up 15 points in 10 games to become the third-most productive player in the NHL. The 29-year-old has scored seven goals and gotten eight assists so far.
Czech goalie Ondřej Pavelec had a night to forget against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre on Sunday, allowing five goals in the Winnipeg Jets’ 5-1 loss. The Habs are first in the NHL on 22 points – having won 11 of 13 games so far. Winnipeg is eighth in the league and last won on Saturday: 3-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Vladimír Kobranov, a member of the Czech hockey team which won the 1949 World Championship died on Sunday at the age of 88. The former defenceman, inducted in the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame, played for the national team from 1947 -1949 and scored 18 goals in 29 matches. In 1950, after the Communists seized power, Mr Kobranov was sent to prison following a political show trial and released five years later. He went on to play for Pardubice and Zlín and left Czechoslovakia in 1968 when he moved to Switzerland. Besides winning the Worlds, Mr Kobranov was a silver medallist from the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz.
Czech forward Tomáš Plekanec has helped the Montreal Canadiens to get off to their best season start since 1977-78, scoring five goals in six games. On Saturday, the forward scored to make it 3:1 against the Detroit Red Wings with only 2:04 left in the third period. The Habs added an empty-net goal to clinch their sixth win in six games. Plekanec recently signed a new two-year extension on his contract with Montreal worth a reported 12 million dollars which will keep him with the Canadiens through 2017-18.
In the NHL on Sunday, Czech forward Tomáš Plekanec scored twice in the Montreal Canadiens' win over the Ottawa Senators. The final score was 3:1. On the first goal, coming in the first ten minutes, Plekanec fired a cheeky sharp angle shot which hit the back of rookie goaltender Matthew O’Connor’s skate before ricocheting into the net. The result means Montreal are three-for-three in the new season.
Czech hockey legend Jaromír Jágr scored two goals in the Florida Panthers' 7:1 season opener over the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL on Saturday. Others who notched up points in other match-ups were Milan Michálek, who scored in the Ottawa Senators 5:4 win over Toronto, and Tomáš Plekanec who got his 500th career point in the Montreal Canadiens' 4:2 defeat of the Boston Bruins.
