Czech ice hockey keeper Tomáš Vokoun has been forbideen by his club, Florida Panthers, to take part in next month’s World Championships in Canada, the Czech national coach Alois Hadamczik said on Saturday. Vokoun has been suffering from a strain hernia since the end of the regular NHL season. He wanted to play in spite of the injury but doctors have recommended an immediate operation.
The Montreal Canadiens missed an opportunity to knock the Boston Bruins out of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Thursday. The game was tied a goal apiece after two periods but the Bruins exploded on the offense in the 3rd, adding four goals for a final score of 5-1. David Krejčí racked up two assists, while forward Vladimir Sobotka scored the final goal of the game – his first in the playoffs – with around two minutes remaining. Montreal still leads the series 3-2 but Boston will hope to win at home on Saturday to force Game 7.
Slavia Praha clinched the Czech ice-hockey cup on Wednesday night, after beating Karlovy Vary 4-2 in game seven of the playoff finals. The game was played out before a record crowd of 17,123 people in Prague’s O2 arena. Karlovy Vary were the biggest surprise of the season, having never made it to the playoffs before and going on this year to beat regular season winner České Budějovice in the semis. But on Thursday, Slavia Praha were just too strong, and won the playoff series by four matches to three.
Slavia Prague battled to a 4-2 victory against Karlovy Vary in the Extraliga Playoff Finals on Thursday evening. It all came down to a decisive Game 7. got off to a winning start in their best-of-seven series against the
Nashville Predators. Hašek stopped 19 shots on the night, while Jiří
Hudler scored the Red Wings’ opener. The final score was 3-1.
In other action in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Montreal Canadiens downed traditional rivals the Boston Bruins 4-1 in the first game of their series. Tomáš Plekanec notched up one assist on the night.

The play-off final of the Czech ice-hockey top division, the O2 extraliga, is underway between Slavia Prague and Energie Karlovy Vary. The best-of-seven playoff began on Friday in Prague when the visiting side marked a surprising victory over Slavia 5:4. The second match of the series on Saturday saw the victory of the Prague-based team 5:2 setting the score of the entire series to 1:1. The seven-game series will move to Karlovy Vary on Tuesday for another two games.
In the NHL on Thursday Jaromír Jágr’s New York Rangers defeated local
rivals the New York Islanders 3-0 to secure a spot in this year’s
Cup playoffs. Jágr – the Ranger’s captain – scored twice in the 1st
period, while compatriot Martin Straka added a third. The Rangers have one
game left to play in the regular season, against the New Jersey Devils. A
win would push the Rangers into the 4th spot in the Eastern Conference –
giving them home ice advantage in the playoffs.
In other action on Thursday, the Nashville Predators secured the final spot in the Western Conference by downing St Louis 3-2. Jan Hlaváč assisted on all three goals, seeing him named 1st star.

overtime to lift Washington over Tampa 4-3 keeping alive his team’s
playoff hopes. Washington have four more games left in the regular season
but trail the Philadelphia Flyers by 2 pts in the 8th and final spot of
In other action, Atlanta’s Robert Holík was also named 1st star, beating the Florida Panthers’ Tomáš Vokoun twice on the night to lift the Thrashers to the win. The final score was 3-2. The Thrashers are out of the upcoming playoffs, but the Panthers still hold a theoretical chance with four games left. Currently Florida is 7 pts off the final spot.
