Czech Tampa Bay Lightning back Andrej Šustr scored his first goal in the club’s Stanley Cup campaign. Šustr scored to make the score 2:0 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tampa then build up a 4:0 lead by the end of the second period but Pittsburgh came back with three goals in the final period. Tampa’s win levels the Eastern Conference series at 2:2.
Expectations were low at first but grew as the group stage advanced. And most Czechs probably thought they had a better than even chance of reaching the ice hockey World Championship semi-finals and a chance of the medals by overcoming the United States. But a penalty shoot-out following a tense quarter-final match decided otherwise and the Czechs are now on their way home.
The Czech team have been knocked out of the Ice Hockey World Championship, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the US in in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Czechs opened the scoring with Tomáš Zohorna in the 15th minute, but Auston Matthews equalled the score at the start of the second period. The game remained tied after overtime and was decided by penalty shootouts.

Previously undefeated in five matches in the competition, the Czechs took the lead in the second period through Tomáš Plekanec but ended up losing 2:1 after a shootout. The Czech Republic will face Switzerland in their final Group A game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Czech team beat Norway 7:0 in their fourth game of the ice hockey world championship being hosted in Russia. Dominik Furth, for the second time in goal, achieved his second shut-out in the competition so far. The Czechs scored their first goal in the sixth minute and cruised to a 3:0 advantage by the end of the first period. Unbeaten and heading group A with the loss of only one point, the Czechs look almost certain to make the quarterfinals and now face Kazakhstan on Friday.
In ice hockey, the Czech squad playing in the world championships in Russia are weighing up the possibilities of calling up NHL players Redek Faksa and Aleš Hemský. Both the Dallas Stars forward, Faksa, and winger, Hemský, ended their NHL seasons after a defeat on Wednesday night. The Czech team currently in Moscow still has the chance of adding two extra players to the squad. If picked, Faksa would be making his debut but Hemský is an experienced player with the national team. The Czech have so far won all three of their opening games and face Norway in the afternoon game.

Goalie Pavel Francouz, who got the start over Dominik Furch who shutout Russia at the start of the tournament, was beaten twice; the Czechs, however, were able to answer with four straight goals for the win. The Czechs have won three matches out of three so far (one in extra time, on penalty shots) meaning they have eight of a possible nine points and are in first place in Group A.
