A new feature-length documentary film about the great Czech ice hockey player Jaromír Jágr is set to begin shooting later this year, iDnes.cz reported on Thursday. Producer Jiří Jurtin told the news site that the star had given permission for the making of 68, which refers to the number he wears on his jerseys. Mr. Jurtin said a top director would helm the documentary, while Czech and international interviewees have been lined up for the project, which will also draw on archive material. The film is due to premiere in autumn next year, when the NHL is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Legendary Czech winger Jaromír Jágr was one of the draws in an NHL pre-season match on Sunday between his team the Florida Panthers and the Dallas Stars at the Budweiser Gardens arena in London, Ontario, home of the London Knights junior hockey team, news site idnes.cz reports. According to the idnes, interest in tickets was high not only among locals but also tourists. In the match, the Panthers edged the Stars by a score of 2:1. The regular NHL season, in which teams play 82 games, begins on October 12.
Czech goalies have gotten ice time in pre-season matches in the NHL: David
Rittich, who played his last two seasons for Mladá Boleslav, took to the
ice for the first time for his new team the Calgary Flames. Rittich came on
in the third period in a game against Winnipeg and stopped six shots and
allowed no goals. The final score was 3:0 for the Flames.
The Washington Capitals' Vítek Vaněček played the opening 28 minutes against the Carolina Hurricane, allowing a single goal. The Caps lost the match 2:1 in overtime. The 20-year-old goalkeeper got the start again and played the full 60 minutes against the Montreal Canadiens but allowed five goals on 29 shots. The final score was 5:2.
Nashville's Marek Mazanec stopped 11 shots by Florida and allowed one goal in two periods of play; Nashville went on to lose by a score of 4:1.
Ice hockey coach Vladimír Růžička has received a fine of CZK 400,000 after being found guilty of embezzling CZK 500,000 intended for his then club Slavia Prague. If Růžička, who denies any wrongdoing, fails to pay the fine he will face 16 months in prison. The verdict may be appealed. As a player Růžička was part of the Czech team that won gold in the Olympics while as a trainer he has led the national side and spent nearly 15 years at Slavia.
The Czech Republic won their last game at the World Cup of Hockey in Canada, beating the USA 4:3 on Thursday in a match to decide third place in their group. Both sides had already failed to progress to the semi-finals at the tournament. Two of the Czechs’ goals came from forward Milan Michálek. Josef Jandač’s men had lost their previous games to Canada and Team Europe.
The Czech Republic now have no way of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto. Josef Jandač’s men only have one point after a 6:0 loss to Canada and a 3:2 defeat to Team Europe on penalties and had their hopes of advancing extinguished when Canada beat the US on Tuesday. The Czechs will face the US on Friday in a game to decide third place in their group.
The Czech national hockey team lost their second-straight game at the World Cup of Hockey, outplayed by Team Europe who won 3-2 in overtime. A brave effort by goalie Petr Mrázek, who stopped 38 shots, saw the team at least salvage a point. The Czechs, with a single point, will need favorable results from other teams to have a chance at a tie-breaker to advance. They play the United States on Thursday.
In ice hockey, the Czech Republic won their return match against Russia at the O2 Arena in Prague on Saturday night 2:1 after penalties. The win is revenge for the 3:4 defeat in Moscow on Thursday. The two matches are warm ups for the World Cup of Hockey being hosted in Toronto from September 17 to October 1. The Czech team begins the tournament against hosts Canada. On Wednesday, the warm up games continue in Pittsburgh, US, with a game against a North American team.
