The Czech ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr now has the joint second-highest points tally in the NHL. The forward, who is 44 and first joined the league in 1990, recorded three assists in his Florida Panthers’ 4-3 win over Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday to tie with Mark Messier on 1,887 points. The all-time points record is 2,857 for Wayne Gretzky. Jágr also scored 371 points outside the NHL during spells abroad.
In ice hockey, the Czech team ended their run of defeats in the Channel One Cup competition with a 4:1 win against Sweden. The Czechs took the lead before the Swedes drew level in the first period and went ahead again in the 35th minute with the remaining goals late in the game. The Czechs had previously lost to Russia and Finland. Goal tender Pavel Francouz was given much of the credit for keeping out the Swedish attack. In spite of the win, the Czechs still end the tournament in bottom place.

Trainer Josef Jandač’s team are without any points following the previous loss on Thursday night against Finland. They face Sweden in the last encounter of the tournament on Sunday night.

Trainer Josef Jandač said afterwards that he was happy with the performance for about half of the match, criticising in particular lax puk possession and the Czechs lack of effectiveness in front of goal. Czech players Jakub Voráček and Tomáš Plekanec picked up points in their respective games on Saturday. Voráček, who plays for the Philadelphia Flyers scored once and had three assists against Dallas. The Flyers won the match 4-2 and now have an eight-game winning streak. The Montreal Canadiens' Plekanec got four assists against the Colorado Avalanche. The Habs declassed their opponents, winning 10-1.
Washington Capitals forward Jakub Vrána got his first goal in the NHL on Friday, helping the Caps down the Buffalo Sabres 4-1. Columbus' Lukáš Sedlák also scored his first goal in the NHL, beating fellow Czech Petr Mrázek between the posts for Detroit. Mrázek was pulled after the goal. Columbus win the game by a score of 4-1.
Czech forward David Pastrňák has continued his scoring streak, racking up his 16th goal in the NHL this season for the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. The Bruins managed to earn a point from the match against the Washington Capitals, losing 4-3 in overtime. Pastrňák, 20, is currently third on the NHL scorers’ list behind Sidney Crosby and Patrik Laine.
Jakub Voráček got an assist in the Philadelphia Flyers win over Nashville – the team’s fifth straight victory. In other NHL hockey, Petr Mrázek continued to do well between the posts for the Detroit Red Wings, helping the club win 4:3 in overtime. Detroit are currently in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference and 20th in the league overall.
