Karolína Plíšková won her first title of the year when she beat
American CoCo Vanderweghe in the final of the Stuttgart Open on Sunday. She
won in straight sets 7:6, 6:4.
The win takes Plíšková’s overall tally of tournament titles to 10.
It’s Plíšková’s first win on clay since 2015 when she won the Prague tournament. Plíšková’ is seeded one when she takes part in the Prague Open next week.
The Czech Republic’s men’s tennis team have reached the playoffs for
the elite World Group in the Davis Cup. The Czechs made it 3:1 against
Israel with a doubles win in Ostrava on Saturday for an unassailable lead
on games in the best of five series.
The draw for the playoffs takes place next Wednesday. The Czech Republic won the Davis Cup in 2012 and 2013.
Czech tennis player Barbora Strýcová turned a last minute doubles pairing
into a winning combination when she won the Indian Wells title with
Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei.
They beat Russia’s Ekateria Makarova and Elena Vesnina, the top seeds, 6:4; 6:4 to win the doubles title.
The winners had originally expected to play with different partners and made a last minute decision to pair up for one of the biggest tennis events outside the Grand Slams.
Czech women’s tennis number one Karolína Plíšková has reached the quarter finals at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in the United States. The 25-year-old overcame Amanda Anisimov of the US 6-1 7-6. The 16-year-old, who is ranked 149 in the world, had earlier caused an upset by knocking out Plíšková’s compatriot Petra Kvitová.
