Karolína Plíšková has reached the third round of tennis’s Australian
Open in Melbourne. The 26-year-old Czech overcame Madison Brengle of the US
4-6 6-1 6-0 in Wednesday’s match.
However, her twin sister, Kristýna Plíšková, has been knocked out in the first Grand Slam of the year. She lost 3-6 5-7 in the second round to Zhang Shuai.
In tennis, Petra Kvitová has won her second Sydney International title on
Saturday. The Czech world No. 8 recovered from a poor start to beat home
favorite Ashleigh Barty 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 in the final match on Saturday.
The Czech Republic’s Kateřina Siniaková has picked up the women’s doubles title in Sydney with Aleksandra Krunić of Serbia, overcoming Eri Hozumi and Alicja Rosolska 6-1 7-6 in the final match.
The 22-year-old Siniaková became the sole holder of the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking following the end of the tournament, after previously sharing the top ranking with Barbora Krejčíková.
The Czech Republic’s Karolína Plíšková has won tennis’s Brisbane
International in Australia. The one-time world number one, who is 26,
overcame Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 4-6 7-5 6-2 in Sunday’s final for the
12th title of her career. Tsurenko twisted her ankle in the deciding set.
Plíšková also began 2017 with victory in Brisbane. Her latest win means she will now climb above compatriot Petra Kvitová to seventh in the world rankings.
The Czech-American pairing of Květa Peschkeová and Nicole Melichar have
won the doubles competition at tennis’s Brisbane International after a
6-1 6-1 win over Taiwanese sisters Hao-Ching Chan and Latish Chan on
Melichar (who was born in born in Brno) and Peschkeová had previously overcome the Czech world numbers ones in the women’s doubles, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková, in the semi-finals in Brisbane.
Meanwhile Czech Karolína Plíšková has reached the singles final at the tournament, in which she will face Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.
Katerina Siniakova led the Czech team to its 11th Fed Cup victory on
Sunday. beating Sofia Kenin 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, her second singles win in the
space of 24 hours.
The match lasted three hours and 45 minutes at Prague’s O2 Arena. It is the 11th Fed Cup victory overall for the Czechs and the 6th in 8 years.
Czech tennis player Barbora Strýcová has announced that she will retire
from the sport after the Fed Cup contest against the US team in Prague this
Strýcová, now 32, won the Fed Cup for the first time when she was only 16. She won again in a double’s team with Karolína Plíšková. She achieved her highest WTA singles ranking, a world No. 16, in January 2017. This May, she peaked at No. 7 in the doubles rankings.
Meanwhile, Plíšková has pulled out of the Fed Cup due to a calf injury. She will be replaced by Barbora Krejčíková, who leads the WTA doubles rankings with her partner Kateřina Siniaková.
