At the weekend singer Lenka Dusilová and VJ Aeldryn performed a four-part music and visuals benefit show entitled MONUMENT/UM aimed at raising funds to repair dilapidated historical landmarks in north and west Bohemia. The first part took place at the Church of the Visitation in Horní Vítkov in the Liberec region.
The Colours of Ostrava international music festival is among the largest multi-genre events in Europe. Thousands of visitors can choose between acts appearing on more than 24 stages in the unique environment of the former Dolní Vítkovice ironworks. This year, the festival’s 18th edition, fans took in legendary bands such as The Cure, Florence + the Machine or ZAZ, along with a variety of Czech and Slovak artists.
The sixty veterans taking part in the Retro Prague Historic Rally, an annual mass ride of historic automobiles from Slovakia to the Czech Republic, covered approximately 700 kilometres in the course of the three-day event. The Praga Alfa, produced in 1922, was the oldest car there. The rally attracted participants from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and the United States.
The reconstruction of the largest military encounter on Czech territory, the Prussian-Austrian Battle of Chlum near Hradec Králové in 1866, took place in Chlum at the weekend. The battle scene depicting the last attack was based on historical events, when Austrian troops attacked the hill near Chlum, which had already been taken by the Prussians.
The 15th edition of the Memorial Air Show, which is held every year at Roudnice nad Labem, boasted planes, helicopters and acrobatic aircraft, including a legendary Spitfire from the UK, a Mustang from the US and modern equivalents. This year’s show celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy.
The biggest homing pigeons’ race took place in Krajková, in the Sokolovsko region, on Sunday June 9th. Tens of thousands of homing pigeons set out on a flight of several hundred kilometres from West Bohemia to Moravia or as far as Slovakia. The first pigeons made it back home within five to six hours.
