Friday marks the 30th anniversary of the day Czechoslovak athlete Jarmila Kratochvílová broke the world record in the women’s 800 metres. Remarkably, the time Kratochvílová set in Munich in 1983 has never been bettered, becoming one of the longest standing records in world athletics.

That the Wimbledon quarter-final would be difficult for Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych was pretty much a given, considering he was taking on World No.1 Novak Djokovic. Ahead of the match, the two had met on the court 15 times and only twice had Berdych bested the Serbian player. On Wednesday, he had obvious chances and was arguably in it until the middle of the second set. After that things went downhill fast.

The country’s two top tennis players, Petra Kvitová and Tomáš Berdych, have made it to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Kvitová, who was the women’s champion at the All-England Club in 2011, will face Kirsten Flipkens who has never before made it so far. Berdych, by contrast, faces an arguably tougher opponent in Novak Djokovic – who he has only beaten twice.

This year’s Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins was an epic and tightly-fought affair, with the Bruins – including future hall-of famer Jaromír Jágr – needing to win on Monday to force a deciding Game 7. It didn’t happen: with less than two minutes remaining on the clock, the Blackhawks scored not once but twice – a one-two punch from which the Bruins couldn’t recover.
